Jerry Moles

Consulting Director of Land Stewardship, New River Land Trust, Grayson Land Care

Jerry Moles started his professional career as a community organizer with Action for Appalachian Youth in Kanawha County, West Virginia in the 1960s. He returned to graduate school in the late 1960s and, after fieldwork in Peru, accepted a faculty position with the University of California - Davis with connections to the International Agriculture Development Program, Ecology Group, and the Department of Anthropology. Since then he has served on the faculty of the University of California at Berkeley, Stanford University, and Pomona College. In addition, Jerry has been an environmental mediator (Endangered Species Act and the spotted owl in Northern California), co-director of a research center in Sri Lanka, planning consultant to Save-the-Redwoods League, California Polytechnic Institute in Pomona, United Nations Environmental Program, Sri Lanka Export Development Board, and Lanka Organics, Ldt.

At present, Jerry serves on the boards of the New River Roundtable, the Blue Ridge Forest Cooperative, Eco Era (Costa Rica), and the International Analog Forestry Network (Costa Rica and The Netherlands). He is co-founder and chair the board of the NeoSynthesis Research Centre (Sri Lanka) and serves as the consulting director of land stewardship with the New River Land Trust. Currently he is learning to manage his family’s 200 acre forest.
