Michael A. Almond

Director, ARDI and Special Assistant to the Chancellor for Economic Development

Michael A. Almond, a native of Pilot Mountain, NC, is the Director of the Appalachian Regional Development Institute and also serves as Special Assistant to the Chancellor for Economic Development at ASU. Michael is a graduate of UNC-Chapel Hill (Morehead Scholar) and the UNC School of Law (Morehead Fellow), and also received a Fulbright Fellowship for independent study at the University of Mannheim in Germany. He is currently Of Counsel to the law firm of Parker Poe Adams & Bernstein LLP, where for many years he served as Chairman of the firm’s international business law division.

From 1999-2005, Michael was President & CEO of the Charlotte Regional Partnership, a regional economic and community development nonprofit, and also served as chairman of the board of directors of the Charlotte Branch of the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond. Michael is a charter member of the board of directors of the Golden LEAF Foundation and serves on the executive committee of the Northwest North Carolina Advanced Materials Cluster. Michael continues to pursue his interest in foreign affairs and the global economy as a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, board member of the Atlantic Council of the United States, and Warburg Chapter Director of the American Council on Germany in Charlotte. In 2005 he was awarded the Knight’s Cross of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany by German President Koehler. Michael and his wife Helen Ruth live on a farm in rural Alleghany County.
